THE Statistician-General of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Simon Harry, has advocated for a substantial increase in cotton production to help the country’s industries recover.
He estimates that roughly 33 of the Federation’s states are already producing the commodity.
He went further to say that boosting cotton production might help Nigerian industries come back to life.
This he stated, while the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Nigerian Cotton Association (NCA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (NACOTAN).
According to him, the data will allow the Federal Government to assess the status of cotton production in Nigeria and determine what needs to be done to boost the sector.
The aim of the agreement is to create and manage a trustworthy, robust, and reliable database for Nigeria’s cotton industry.
Harry said: “Interestingly, I got to know that about 33 States of the Federation are producing cotton.
“That is very good information for some of us that are preparing for retirement.
” So that you get your farmlands and through mass production of cotton we will be able to revamp industries that are completely dead.”
He, NACOTAN’s president, Anibe Achimugu, and NBS’s Statistician-General/CEO, Dr. Simon. B Harry, signed the MoU at NBS’s headquarters in Abuja’s Central Business District.
