AS Nigerians at home and abroad continue to celebrate the achievements of their athletes in global competitions, artistes are not left out of the honour that Nigeria is receiving. The Commonwealth Games currently holding in Birmigham, United Kingdom is the focus of attention now with accolades pouring in for Nigerians.
Medals are already being won but for artistes, one name stands out for Nigeria.
Lekan Babalola, the dynamic and multi-talented London-based artiste, is currently being celebrated for the right reasons.
On Thursday at the colourful opening ceremony at the Birmigham stadium, the two-time Grammy award co-winning musician stood tall on the stage as the co-composer of the opening track “Call to the gather” for the commonwealth games. He also played ‘Iya’lu’, the mother talking drum, as part of the performance of that song at the opening ceremony.
The performance features a number of other Nigerians and Ghanaians, all now being celebrated on social media.
Babalola also joined the Nigerian contingent when they entered the arena for the opening ceremony.
Babalola had on Saturday July 23 performed at the Commonwealth Games special edition of the 6th Birchfield Jazz Festival, which was live-streamed from St. Mary’s Church, Handsworth Birmingham venue.
