KIDS Do Spell is the brainchild of Comfort Alli, the President, Board of Trustees of Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative (SCCWI). According to her, the initiative has three main objectives:

“To the pupils/participants: It develops their cognitive skills. It also develops their vocabulary and competency while bringing about self development and confidence. It aids public speaking and good communication skills and bring about ability to deal with pressure.

“To organisation: This program gives us an opportunity to deal directly with less-privileged children who has the potential to develop very well both cognitive and academic wise. So this is why the program is limit to only public schools and underserved community.

“To the school and government: It is an opportunity for the government to evaluate their pupils and know their academic performance.”

As part of activities to commemorate this year’s International Literacy Day, SCCWI organised a ‘Talk and Spelling Bee Competition’ tagged: ‘KIDS DO WELL 2.0’ with wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu as special guest.

Participants were drawn from 25 public primary schools representing the 20 Local Government Education Authorities in the state.

The Lagos First Lady said ” I am inspired by the objective of the Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative which is to pursue a worthy cause of helping as many children as possible to live better lives and grow to become not just responsible adults, but most importantly, fulfill their dreams and aspirations in life.

“The periodic Street Outreach geared towards reaching out to the homeless children on the streets and extending care in the form of shelter and protection services to these children is also worthy of commendation.”

She, however, advised that “conscious efforts must be made on a sustainable basis to enhance literacy learning spaces. In doing this, it is important to leverage technology to improve the teaching and learning process. This is important and critical to protect and secure the future of our children and young people.”

She added, “I am glad that this is the focus of the Spelling Bee Competition and I sincerely commend the Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative, while also wishing you the very best as you mark another literacy day celebration.”
