I should have knocked Franklin out — Anthony Joshua

ANTHONY Joshua was not fully satisfied with his performance on Saturday night despite his victory over Jermaine Franklin.

The Nigerian-Briton secured his first win in two years with a unanimous decision victory over the American at the 02 Arena in London in their heavyweight boxing clash.

Joshua, the 33-year-old former World Boxing Association, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, had a relatively comfortable 25th win of his career but he wanted more.

“Last time I grabbed the mic, it was a bit chaotic. I’m calm; I appreciate everyone coming out on Saturday,” Joshua said after the win, referencing his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk last year where he had a post-fight meltdown.

On Saturday night, two of the three judges scored the fight 117-111 and the third 118-111, all in favour of Joshua over the 29-year-old Franklin.

“I should have knocked him out but it is done,” the former world champion said.

“On to the next. He (Franklin) is here to prove himself, not roll over. I wish I could have knocked him out.”

Joshua’s next target is a megabout against World Boxing Council champion and fellow Briton Tyson Fury.

The two were on the verge of sealing a proposed £100m fight last year until Fury pulled out, insisting that his conditions had not been met.

“I would be honoured to fight for the WBC heavyweight championship of the world. If he’s listening, he knows my promoter; we’ve had dialogue before, so let’s continue this. We ain’t getting any younger.”
