A boat carrying passengers today in from Yenagoa to Okpoama in the Brass local government area of Bayelsa State capsized, leaving a large number of people missing.
The incident took place at the Okoroma River in the state’s Nembe local government area.
It was reported that the wooden boat was carrying both passengers and cargo before sinking in the middle of the river.
Information gathered reveals that, some of the parents who were on the tragic boat have been looking for their missing children.
As of the time the report was filled out, the number of casualties was not yet known because the rescue effort was still going on.
Ipigansi Ogoniba, the chairman of the maritime union workers in Bayelsa State, confirmed the incident over the phone and stated that a rescue team had already been dispatched to the scene.
When reached, SP Asinim Butswat, the police spokesman for Bayelsa State, stated that the Nembe local government police division had not been notified of the incident.
