THE governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara has requested that a supplementary budget be granted and the Rivers State House of Assembly has debated the issue and accepted the first reading.
Fubara submitted a N200 billion additional budget proposal to the House earlier this month in order to complete various infrastructure improvements in the state.
Former Deputy Speaker and current House Leader Edison Ehie read the letter during the plenary yesterday and requested that the House take the issue into consideration.
The Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, read a letter to the House that explicitly referenced the Port Harcourt ring road project, for which funding was not included in the 2023 budget.
The Speaker declared the letter had passed the first reading after significant deliberation.
While this was going on, several University of Port Harcourt students demonstrated outside the House, pleading with the Speaker to step in and ask the governor to honor his commitment to provide them with bursaries.
The Speaker applauded youths for their audacity and pledged to take action.
