THE Executive Chairman, Edo state Sports Commission, Yusuf Alli, has expressed delight in the superlative performance of Edo Queens Football Club at the CAF Women’s Champions League Zone B qualifiers in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Edo Queens finished on top of their group after recording victories in all their matches against AS GNN, Hasaacas Ladies and Etincelle.

The Edo Sports Commission boss said he was impressed with the girls’ exploits on their debut CAF ChampionsLeague appearance.

He was speaking while reacting to the 1-0 victory over Omnisports Etincelle, encouraging them to keep the momentum as they face host team in the semi-finals.

“I congratute our girls. They have been spectacular since they started the CAF Champions League preliminaries in Cote d’Ivoire. Our Governor is pleased with their results and performance so far and charged them to keep the momentum and bring the cup to Benin,” Alli, an Olympian in men’s long jump, said.

Edo Queens pipped Etincelle 1-O in the last game of Group B of the WAFU Zone B CAF Champions League qualifiers on Saturday evening to wrap up their unbeaten run and qualified for the semi-finals, with Joy Jerry’s first half goal sealing the victory.

The reigning Nigeria Women’s Football League champions started their campaign in Abidjan with a 5-0 thrashing of AS Garde National of Niger Republic before hitting Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana 3-0 in their second group outing.

The 1-0 win over Omnisports Etincelle of Burkina Faso ensured the Benin girls finished winners of the group ahead of Omnisports Etincelle, who also made it to the semi-finals.

Edo Queens face D’Abidjan on Tuesday at the Stade De La Paix in Bouake.
