PSG star Neymar tests positive for coronavirus

Brazilian and Paris Saint-Germain star, Neymar, has tested positive for the coronavirus following a holiday to Ibiza.

This was disclosed by ESPN sources on Wednesday.

Neymar is in good health and currently following Covid-19 protocol, having received the test results on Wednesday morning, the sources said.

He is now in a 14-day self-isolation at his Bougival residence, in the west suburbs of Paris, and will miss PSG’s first game of the season, against Lens on Sept. 10, and the Classique against Marseille on Sept. 13.

According to a further source, it has been confirmed that Neymar is due to be retested.

Argentine star and Neymar’s teammate, Angel Di Maria, is also in self-isolation in Paris after testing positive for COVID-19, sources told ESPN.

The Argentina international also went on a holiday to Ibiza. Fellow teammate who spent his holidays with Di Maria on the Spanish island, Leandro Paredes, has tested positive as well and is also in self-isolation, sources said.

Neymar is the latest high-profile footballer to test positive for the virus. Manchester United’s Paul Pogba was, last week, removed from the France squad following his test. The French midfielder has been replaced by Eduardo Camavinga in Didier Deschamps’ squad to face Sweden on Sept. 5 and Croatia on Sept. 8.

The French league is already under way but PSG are due to start their title defence at Racing Lens on Sept. 10 after being given an extended break due to their participation in the later stages of the Champions League.

The opening game of the Ligue 1 season between Marseille and Saint-Etienne had to be postponed last month after four home players tested positive for Covid-19.

The French league told clubs last week its protocol for dealing with coronavirus meant more than three positive cases at a club was likely to lead to a postponement.

The 2019-20 campaign was curtailed in April because of the Covid-19 pandemic, with Paris St-Germain, 12 points clear at the top, awarded the title.
