An interim government allied with Libya’s eastern-based renegade commander Khalifa Haftar has resigned amid protests over power cuts and deteriorating living conditions.
Ezzel-Deen al-Falih, a spokesman for the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR), said Prime Minister Abdallah al-Thani tendered the government’s resignation to Speaker Aguila Saleh late on Sunday.
Parliamentary spokesman Abdallah Abaihig said HoR lawmakers would review the resignation of al-Thani’s government, which is not internationally recognised, in their next meeting. No date has been set for the session.

[11:23 am, 14/09/2020] Kolawole Naija: Egypt extends detention of Al Jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein
Egyptian national has been held for more than 1,300 days despite repeated calls for an end to his ‘arbitrary detention’.
Egyptian authorities extended the detention of Al Jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein by another 45 days.
The extension on Sunday came more than 1,300 days after his arrest upon arrival in Egypt’s capital, Cairo.
Hussein, an Egyptian national working for the Al Jazeera Arabic television channel in Qatar, was arrested on December 20, 2016, while on a personal visit to see his family.
Hussein was accused of “incitement against state institutions and broadcasting false news with the aim of spreading chaos”, allegations he and the Al Jazeera Media Network deny.
