Iwobi makes late appearance as Everton slip up at Newcastle United

SUPER Eagles forward Alex Iwobi was a late substitute on Sunday in Carlo Ancelotti’s desperate bid to salvage something from Everton’s Premier League clash at Newcastle United.

Everton lost their second consecutive game on Saturday with the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’s Park.

It was the first time Ancelotti would suffer two straight defeats in a domestic league since 2014.

Callum Wilson struck twice for hosts Newcastle United while Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late consolation for Everton.

Despite the absence of the injured James Rodriguez and the suspended Richarlison, Iwobi was left on the bench until the 77th minute by Ancelotti.

The Nigerian was eventually brought on to replace defender Jonjoe Kenny with Everton trailing 2-0.Wilson got his first goal from the penalty spot in the 56th minute and added the second six minutes from time.

Calvert-Lewin responded with his eighth league goal of the season in the 90th minute after stabbing home Iwobi’s ball, but it was too little, too late.

The defeat meant Everton stay in second place in the table with 13 points from seven games, while Newcastle moved up to 10th with 11 points.

Iwobi is in the Super Eagles squad for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone later in November.
