Super Eagles land in Freetown for redemption clash

THE Super Eagles have arrived in Freetown, Sierra Leone for Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Leone Stars.

The Nigerian contingent, made up of players, team officials and Nigeria Football Federation officials, left from Benin City via a chartered plane earlier in the day and stopped over briefly in Lagos to refuel.

They landed at the compact Freetown airport, which  is  located on an island, on Monday afternoon and proceeded to the mainland on a ferry.

“We have arrived in Freetown, we are on a ferry to the City Centre,” the team’s media team announced at a few minutes past 3pm.

Tuesday’s match is a shot at quick redemption for the Super Eagles after the horror show they put up in Benin City on Friday.

In the first of the double-header with the Leone Stars, the Super Eagles turned from heroes to villains in a matter of minutes.

They took a comfortable 4-0 lead within the first 29 minutes and went into the break 4-1 up.

But in less than 20 minutes at the end of the second half it was 4-4, a result that left the few people at the stadium and the millions of Nigerians watching on television stunned and angry.

The team can earn some forgiveness though if they beat the Leone Stars on Tuesday and confirm their participation at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles lead their qualifying group with seven points, five ahead of the Leone Stars, who must win on Tuesday to stand any chance of reaching Cameroon.
