Abraham shoots Chelsea past Newcastle to top of EPL

CHELSEA became the latest side to climb to the Premier League summit with a comfortable 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’s Park on Saturday.

Tammy Abraham, the England striker born to Nigerian parents, sealed the win after a Federico Fernandez own goal had given Chelsea the lead.

A totally dominant Chelsea took the lead after just 10 minutes, the hapless Fernandez turning Mason Mount’s cross from the right into his own net.

Chelsea kept on the pressure and should have been well ahead before the break, but Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow made important saves to prevent Timo Werner and Abraham from extending Chelsea’s advantage.

Newcastle put up a little more fight early in the second half but did not trouble Chelsea much before the visitors got their second goal.  

The two Chelsea front men then combined to put the game to bed in the 65th minute.

Werner picked the ball up in midfield and skipped past two Newcastle United players before calmly setting up Abraham for a simple finish from inside the Newcastle box.

The goal means Abraham has scored in each of his last three games across all competitions for the Blues: against Rennes in the UEFA Champions League, and against Sheffield United and Newcastle United in the Premier League.

The win took Chelsea top of the topsy turvy table with 18 points from nine matches, ahead of second-place Leicester City on goals difference.

Newcastle United are 13th with 11 points from nine games.
