Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho believes his side did enough to at least get a draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.Liverpool scored a late goal to win the fixture 2-1 and the Reds went three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scored for the champions while Heung-min Son was on target for the visitors.
Although Liverpool had 75 percent of the possession, most of it in Tottenham’s half, and had more shots on goal and created more chances, Mourinho insisted that his team did not deserve to lose.
“If it was a draw, I wouldn’t be jumping with happiness, because the draw would be the minimum for what we did,” Mourinho told the Tottenham Hotspur website.
“To lose it is hard, but we lost. We had chances in the moment they were suffering. Of course, I know it’s a word people love, possession, but for me it’s not (about) possession, it’s what you do when you have the ball, how dangerous you are when you have the ball, and in the second half, we got in the face of the goalkeeper two or three times, and we have to score to win the game, period.
“There is no story. Score the goal, three points, go home and no more talk. I’m disappointed because we deserved much more, but that’s the way it is.”Salah opened the scoring for a dominant Liverpool in the 26th minute as his shot deflected off a Tottenham Hotspur defender and sailed over goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.Son equalised for Spurs seven minutes later from a breakaway, marginally beating Liverpool’s offside trap to beat goalkeeper Alisson Becker with a smart finish.Liverpool had the majority of the ball in the second half and pinned Tottenham back, but the visitors could have snatched the lead through Steven Bergwijn who shot hit the post when through on goal and Harry Kane who could not convert from a free header.Firmino headed in the winner in the 90th minute from a corner kick, rewarding Liverpool for their relentless positive play. When Mourinho was asked on Amazon TV what he was discussing with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp at full-time, he said: “I told him the best team lost. He didn’t agree. “By the way, if I behaved the way he does on the touchline, I would have no chance.”
