Lewandowski beats Messi, Ronaldo to FIFA award as Klopp, Neuer, Son also win

BAYERN Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has won his first The Best FIFA award for the Best Men’s Player of 2020.

The Poland international beat serial winners Lionel Messi to the main award of the night at a virtual ceremony on Thursday.

Lewandowski has had a brilliant 2020, outscoring almost every other player as he helped Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and UEFA Champions League treble as well as the European Super Cup.

England star Lucy Bronze won The Best FIFA Women’s Player award.In other awards, France and Lyon goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi was named Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

She won her fifth straight Women’s UEFA Champions League title and seventh overall in 2020.

She had earlier in the year been crowned the inaugural UEFA Women’s Champions League Goalkeeper of the season.

Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer won the 2020 Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award for his role in the German club’s success.

Korea and Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min’s wonderful solo goal against Burnley in the Premier League won the Puskas Award for the best goal of 2020. 

Son Heung-min becomes the first South Korean player to be nominated and to win the FIFA Puskas award.

Netherlands manager Sarina Wiegman won The Best FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year award, becoming the first manager to claim the honour twice.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also became the first coach to win TheBest FIFA Men’s Coach award twice after retaining the crown.

The German led Liverpool to their first Premier League title in 30 years and beat Bayern Munich’s Hansi Flick to the award.

Teenager Mattia Agnese won the FIFA Fair Play award for saving the life of an opponent who had lost consciousness following a clash of heads.

The Best FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World XI is made up of Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Sergio Ramos, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, Kevin De Bruyne, Thiago Alcantara, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo.
