Barcelona forward Lionel Messi could end his career in the United States of America, he has said.Messi’s current contract expires in June and he almost left Barcelona at the end of last season after falling out with the club’s hierarchy.
The 33-year-old Argentina captain is free to begin negotiations with clubs outside of Spain in January.”I don’t know what I’m going to do yet,” Messi told Spanish television channel La Sexta.”I’m going to wait until the season ends. I would like to play in the United States and experience life and the league there, but ultimately come back to Barcelona in some capacity.”Right now the most important thing is to focus on the team and finish the season well, to focus on trying to win trophies and not get distracted by other things.”Barcelona are fifth in LaLiga after their worst start to a league campaign in 33 years.Messi joined Barcelona when he was just 13 and has become the club’s record goalscorer, won 10 LaLiga tiles, the Champions League four times and has been voted the world’s best player six times.Meanwhile, Pele’s former club Santos have dismissed the widely held belief that Messi broke the Brazilian legend’s goals record for one clubMessi recently scored his 644th goal for Barcelona to purportedly beat Pele’s record of 643 but Santos have explained why they believe Messi has not broken the record. The Brazilian club insist that Pele’s goals in friendlies should also count towards his Santos total and, as a result, the record stands at 1,091. By their calculation Messi has to score another 448 goals to beat the record.”The matches were played in official uniforms, with the official rules of the game and with a score sheet,” Santos said in a statement.”The numbers are absolute.”A goal against Eibar is statistically the same as that scored against Valencia.”A goal against Transvaal (from Suriname) has the same value as a goal scored at Real Madrid, in the middle of the Santiago Bernabeu.”However Pele, who played for Santos between 1956 and 1974, congratulated Messi last week for breaking the record but Santos remain adamant.
