Enyimba of Aba once again got the better of their local rivals Abia Warriors of Umuahia, winning the Abia Derby 1-0 at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba.
Samad Kadiri scored the only goal of the match as Enyimba claimed their fifth straight Nigeria Professional Football League win against the Warriors.
Both sides could not break the deadlock in a tense first-half, going into the break goalless in the fixture that was shown live on the Nigerian Television Authority and the NPFL TV app.
Enyimba got the breakthrough eight minutes after the break, Kadiri scoring from the penalty spot after a spot kick was awarded for a handball in the Abia Warriors box.
The Aba Elephant kept up the pressure in a bid to extend their lead and Kadiri almost got his and his side’s second goal late in the game but screwed the ball just wide after a brilliant team move.
The win will boost Enyimba’s confidence ahead of the second leg of their CAF Champions League tie with Al Merreikh of Sudan.
The two-time African champions are serious danger of elimination from the continental competition after losing the first leg 3-0 in Omdurman.
