Former UNILAG VC, Ibidapo-Obe, dies at 71

FORMER Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos,  Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo Obe, is dead.

A Systems Engineer and educational administrator, Ibidapo-Obe, reportedly passed on at a private hospital in the early hours of today.

Unconfirmed report said he died of complications arising from Covid-19 infections.

Born July 5, 1949 in Ile Ife, Osun State, Ibidapo-Obe was appointed as the Vice chancellor of the University of Lagos in year 2000, succeeding Jelili Adebisi Omotola. He served till 2007, and as regarded as one of the most successful VC of the UNILAG, with a string of innovative ideas to his name.

A former President of the Nigeria Academy of Science, he was earned First Class degree in Mathematics at the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1971; a Master of Mathematics [M. Maths] degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy {PhD} in Civil Engineering with specialisation in Applied Mechanics/Systems in 1976 — from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

He served as a Visiting Research Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA (1980–1981).  In 2007, he was a Visiting Research Professor at Texas Southern University in Houston, USA.
