NATIONAL: APC has destroyed all institutions of democracy, says Secondus

THE National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of destroying all the institutions of democracy within the period of five and a half years that the party has been at the helm of affairs in the country.

Secondus noted that the administration of the APC has been characterised by human rights abuses and growing insecurity adding that other arms of government have been put under siege by the executive.

The PDP National Chairman said this while playing host to the British High Commission’s Political Counsellor on Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Jonathan Bacon, at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Friday.

He, however, said the PDP was making efforts toward preventing the country from total collapse.

Secondus stressed that the opposition party was planning to hold a conference to discuss the way out of the myriad of socio-political and economic challenges the ruling APC has plunged the country since it wrested the reins of power from the PDP in 2015.

He noted that issues of security, economy, electoral reforms and other issues required to return the nation to the path of peace and progress will be the main focus of the conference.

Secondus said, “For five and a half years now that the APC held sway, our democracy has been under severe stress. All critical institutions of democracy have been brutalised.

“The judiciary, legislature and the media have been under siege while human rights and rule of law; the necessary ingredients of democracy, have all been flagrantly abused.”

Speaking on why he visited the PDP secretariat Bacon told Seondus that his mission was to meet with the leadership of the party to discuss bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
