LAGOS: Jakande to be interred today

THE remains of the first civilian governor of the state, Alhaji Lateef Jakande will be committed to the mother earth today (Friday).

A statement released by the Committee of Friends of the ex-governor, jointly signed by former VC of Lagos State University, Prof. Abisogun Leigh (OFR), Engr. Kamal Giwa, Prince Bayo Oshiyemi, among others, on behalf of Jakande’s friends, said there would be Pre-Burial prayers at number 2 Bishop Street Ilupeju, Lagos State on Friday 12, February 2021 at 9am.

“Interment at Volts and Gardens Ikoyi at 4 pm Friday 12, February 2021.”

Jakande, a journalist was Governor from 1979 to 1983, and later served as Minister of Works under the military government of Gen. Sani Abacha.

He is credited to have created many of the enduring infrastructure — schools, roads, health centres and houses — in the state. He achieved all of these in a space of about three and a half years.

Popularly called “Baba Kekere of Lagos” because of his close association with the late Yoruba leader/head of the defunct Action Group/Unity Party of Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who is known as “Baba,” Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, passed on on Thursday, February 11, at the age of 91.
