Rohr, NFF VP Akinwunmi inspect Teslim Balogun Stadium for Super Eagles

SUPER Eagles head coach and Nigeria Football Federation top officials are seriously considering Lagos to host the team’s matches again.

Nigeria’s commercial capital used to be the permanent home of the country’s national teams, but with the National Stadium in Surulere in an abject state of disrepair for years, the Super Eagles and other teams have been playing elsewhere.

The last time Lagos hosted the Super Eagles was in 2001 against Zambia at the National Stadium, although the state-owned Teslim Balogun Stadium in the same vicinity has hosted junior national team games more recently.

Now, Lagos is in line to play host to the Super Eagles soon and the NFF is making moves to take the team back to Nigeria’s ‘home of football’.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission Sola Aiyepeku gave NFF top shots and Rohr an inspection tour of the facility on Friday.

“Earlier today, I welcomed NFF VP Seyi Akinwunmi and Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to Lagos on an inspection visit to the Teslim Balogun as we work towards bringing the Super Eagles back home to Lagos.  #LagosSportsIsBack,” Aiyepeku tweeted on Friday evening.

While the National Stadium is undergoing renovation, the Teslim Balogun Stadium just across the road could host the Super Eagles as soon as in March for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho.

Although there are reports that Lagos has been chosen to host the match, Naija Times has been informed that no such decision has been taken.

However, Lagos has not been ruled out while other venues are also being considered.
