Guardiola’s Man City thrash Mourinho’s Spurs, Osimhen helps Napoli past Juventus

MANCHESTER City increased their lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Pep Guardiola’s dominant side were much too strong for Jose Mourinho’s team, with Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan scoring the goals.

Rodri opened the scoring in the first half from the penalty spot after Gundogan was fouled in the Tottenham Hotspur box.

Spurs, who were timid in the first half, came out strong after the break but they were soon two goals behind.

In-form Gundogan extended City’s advantage with a close range finish five minutes into thesecond half.

The Germany midfielder made it 10 goals in 10 games with his side’s third in the 66th minute. He left Davinson Sanchez on the floor with a clever turn and slotted past Hugo Lloris into the net after controlling a long punt from goalkeeper Ederson.

City are now unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions and have won 16 matches in a row, while they inflicted the biggest Premier League defeat on Mourinho since he started managing Spurs.

Manchester City are on top with 53 points from 23 matches, seven points ahead of second-place Leicester City who have played a game more.

Tottenham Hotspur are eighth with 36 points from 23 matches.

In Serie A also on Saturday, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was in Napoli’s starting line-up as they dented Juventus’ title hopes with a 1-0 win at the Diego Maradona Stadium.

Lorenzo Insigne scored the only goal of the match with a 31st minute penalty to deny Cristiano Ronaldo and his team from closing the gap on leaders AC Milan.

Osimhen, who only recently returned from a long-term injury and Covid-19, played for 75 minutes before making way for Andrea Petagna.

Napoli rose to fourth in the Italian top flight table with 40 points from 21 games, two points and one spot below Juventus.

Leaders AC Milan have 49 points from 21 games.
