KADUNA: 27,121 persons displaced in Birnin LG

AT least 27,121 persons, including women and children, have been displaced by bandits in the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state.

This was disclosed by the Federal Commissioner in charge of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Senator Bashir Mohammed, yesterday.

Mohammed made this public at the inauguration of the symbolic  distribution of relief materials to internally displaced persons in the area.

Items such as semovita, maize, beans, rice, palm oil, vegetable oil, local energy stoves, mats, plastic bowls, plastic buckets, blankets, grinding machines and sewing machines were distributed by the commission.

The Commissioner said the 1,194 households, comprising of 27,121 persons were internally displaced at Birnin Gwari, noting that food, non-food and empowerment items were brought to support 300 internally displaced households.

Mohammed, who presented the items to the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, also commiserated with the state over the sundry banditry and communal clashes.

He said, “Data collected this year by the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency and NCFRMI Kaduna field office indicate that 1,194 households comprising 27,121 individuals – more than half of whom are women and children are displaced in Birnin Gwari LGA alone.”
