SOKOTO State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, today, described the late Lateef Jakande as a visionary leader, who saw Lagos 40 years ahead, noting that it was one of the reasons he initiated the metroline project, which was, however, cancelled by then military junta of Major-General Muhammed Buhari.
Tambuwal maintained that one of the honours the present administration could do for Jakande is to do everything possible to quickly complete the rail line project that the state had embarked on.
Speaking today at the 40-days prayers for the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Lateef Jakande, Tambuwal added that upcoming leaders and politicians have a lot to learn from Jakande, especially his grassroots politics.
He further said Jakande served with compassion and humility.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on his part, asked religious leaders to join hands to help political leaders to make Nigeria a great country and a better place to be.
Represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, the governor noted that one of the strong pillars on which Nigeria stands on is religion, stating that many citizens believe and respect their religious leaders than political leaders.
He said this is why they must use their sermons to help preach the need for Nigerians to be good citizens, stating that the religious leaders must use their pulpits to tell the congregation the truth and acting right.
The governor, was responding to the sermon by the Missioner of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheik Abdulrahman Ahmad, that many of the political leaders are keeping quiet and not acting to bring an end to the many challenges confronting the country, especially insecurity.
Ahmad added that many of these political leaders are pretending as if all is well when in actual fact, things are not and the country is sinking.
The cleric noted that this is the time Nigeria needs statesmen and not politicians because the latter are thinking about the next election, forgetting that it is when Nigeria exists that election can hold. He maintained that it is not time to keep quiet, but speak up.
