THE tenure of Mohammed Adamu, the 20th Inspector-General of Police since the country’s independence in 1960, formally came to an end today as he handed the reins of power to Usman Alkali Baba as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
Mohammed Adamu, the outgoing IGP, handed over to Baba at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Earlier, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo decorated Usman Baba as the Acting IGP.
Baba, yesterday, was appointed as acting IGP by President Buhari
Baba’s appointment was announced by the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, when he addressed State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa.
He said that the appointment was with immediate effect.
The Acting IGP replaced Mohammed Adamu whose tenure ended on February, but had his tenure extended by Buhari for three months.
He had only spent about two months out of the three-month extension when he was replaced.
According to the statement which announced his tenure extension, Buhari said the decision was “to allow for a robust and efficient process of appointing a new IG.”
The statement added, “This is not unconnected to the desire of Mr President to, not only have a smooth handover, but to also ensure that the right officer is appointed into that position.”
Until yesterday, Usman was the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Federal Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) unit.
He was promoted to the rank in November 2020.
