Edo 2020: Delta sweeps taekwondo medals, leads table

DELTA State has overtaken Bayelsa State to take over the leadership of the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival medals table.

Most of Delta’s gold medals won in Benin City on Wednesday came from taekwondo, with the state’s men and women excelling in the combat sport.

In the women’s 49kg category, Delta’s Sekinat Adebayo won gold, beating host Edo State’s Faith Nwankwo to second place while Happiness Adirimo of Bayelsa and Louisa Laody of Nasarawa shared bronze.

Delta also won taekwondo gold in men’s 74kg category courtesy of Paul Kayode, men’s 58kg through Abdulmujeed Sanusi as well as in the women’s 53kg via Chinasa Nwosu.

Judith Usifo won the women’s 67kg gold for Edo State, who also claimed two gold medals in cycling through Tombrapa Gripa and Goodness Temple.

As at close of events on Tuesday night and mid Wednesday, Delta led the medals table with 12 gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals.

Edo State was a close second with 10 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze medals, with Bayelsa third with 10 gold, four silver and six bronze medals.

The three South South states are well clear of the rest, with Lagos in fourth place with just two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

The festival will run until 14 April in Benin City.
