NIGER: Revenue board chairman, Garba Gunna, emerges Emir of Kagara

A NEW Emir of Kagara has been announced by the government to replace the departed Salihu Tanko Kagara, who vacated the throne last month.

The new monarch announced by the Commisioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, today is Alhaji Ahmad Garba Gunna.

Until his appointment today, Gunna was the acting Chairman of Niger State Internal Revenue Board.

Gunna’s appointment came about 38 days after his predecessor join his ancestors on March 1, 2021 after a protracted illness in a hospital in Minna, the state capital.

Daji said Niger Governor Abubakar Bello approved Gunna’s appointment after receiving the reports of the 14 kingmakers, headed by Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad (Madakin Gunna).

The governor was quoted as saying the appointment of the new Emir was in accordance with section 3 subsection (1) of the Chiefs (Appointment and Deposition) law, Chapter 19, the law of Niger State.

“Having received the advice of the Niger State Council of Chiefs as required under section 7, of Cap 19, I hereby appoint you, Ahmad Garba Gunna as the second Emir of Kagara,” he said.

He is said to be 46 years.

The Village Head of Yakila in Gunna District and Dan Majen Kagara emerged as the new Emir of Kagara after defeating five other contestants in an electoral college conducted by the 14 kingmakers of the Kagara Emirate.

Others who contested with him were Alhaji Muhammad Salihu Tanko, (Bunun Kagara) the son of the late Emir, Alhaji Garba Bako (Dan Galadiman Kagara), Alhaji Aliyu Muhammad Kusherki (Katukan Kagara) and Alhaji Idris Aliyu Jibrin (Barajen Kagara).
