UCL: Mbappe eager for second leg, Flick ‘satisfied’ despite Bayern defeat to PSG

KYLIAN Mbappe has charged his Paris Saint-Germain teammates to finish off Bayern Munich next week after he scored twice in the French club’s dramatic 3-2 victory against the UEFA Champions League holders in their quarter-final first leg in Munich on Wednesday night.

The France forward scored the first and last goals of the night, with Marquinos scoring the other one for PSG. 

Eric Choupo-Moting and Thomas Muller scored for Bayern Munich who had 12 shots on target in a frenetic match under snowy conditions at the Allianz Arena.

“It was a difficult game against the best team in Europe right now,” Mbappe said in his post-match interview. “But it is just the first game. Next week we have to play with confidence and play again like a team.”

The defeat was Bayern’s first in the Champions League in more than two years and the first for their coach Hansi Flick, who had been unbeaten in his previous 16 matches in the competition.

The German coach believes his side deserved more from the game, given their attacking intent.

“The opponent scored three goals out of the few chances they had while we had many chances,” Flick said.

“We could have had a good result today, but our efficiency wasn’t good. However I’m satisfied with the performance and the way we played.

“This team fights on the pitch for 90 minutes, that’s the quality that distinguishes us. The squad is getting thinner and thinner, but we’re making the most of it. Of course, some got upset, but we have to convert this energy in the second leg on Tuesday.”

The return leg will be held in Paris on Tuesday.
