BORNO: Terrorist attacks affecting aid workers’ support – FG

THE Federal Government has condemned attacks on aid workers in the Northeast region, noting that the development has started affecting support from the workers.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, decried the recent terrorist attacks on humanitarian aid facilities and the killing of civilians in Damask, a town around Lake Chad in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the humanitarian ministry, Bashir Alkali, read in part, “The minister expressed concern over the frequent attacks on humanitarian aid facilities in the North-East region of the country.

“She said the violent attacks will affect the support provided by the aid workers to hundreds of thousands people in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in the area.”

Farouq said the attack was unfortunate and against international law on humanitarian operations and aid workers.

This is the second time the minister would be expressing concern over insurgents’ attack of aid workers and humanitarian hubs.

She had expressed similar concern in the wake of the attack launched against the humanitarian aid facilities by terrorists in Dikwa, Borno State a month ago.

Farouq was quoted as saying, “The attacks on aid facilities and killing of civilians should be condemned at all levels. Humanitarian aid organisations should be allowed to perform their duties in line with global best practices.”
