RIVERS Angels have emerged as the 2021 Nigeria Women’s Premier League champions after a big win in Sunday’s finale in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The Port Harcourt club defeated Sunshine Queens of Akure 4-0 in one of the two decisive matches on Sunday.
In the other match, FC Robo beat Delta Queens 1-0 to end the Delta side’s hopes of winning the title.
The win over Sunshine Queens ensured Rivers Angels finished on top of the Super Six table to retain the title they won in 2019.
The other teams in the Super Six in Ijebu-Ode vying for a ticket to represent Nigeria in a new continental competition were Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens.
Oghenebrume Ikhekua gave the Rivers United the lead on Sunday in the second minute, and Vivian Ikechuchwu made it 2-0 just before half-time.
Alice Ogebe increased Rivers Angels’ lead in the 63rd minute before Maryann Ezeanagu sealed the win the Port Harcourt side needed to claim the title.
As champions, Rivers Angels will represent Nigeria at next month’s maiden WAFU B zonal competition, where they will battle to qualify for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League.
