THE sports ministry has stated that it will soon constitute committees to conduct elections into the sports federations.

Sports minister Sunday Dare recently dissolved the boards of the federations, noting that their four-year tenures had ended.

The ministry said on Sunday that plans had been concluded to set up electoral committees to oversee elections into the new boards of the 31 federations.

In a statement signed by the Director of FEAD of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Simeon Ebhojaiye, the ministry promised to ensure fair elections.

“In order to avoid a vacuum in running the affairs of the federations, the ministry swiftly constituted a three-man Caretaker Committee for each to hold the fort before the elections that will take place in September, 2021,” the statement said.

“As part of efforts to organise concise and credible elections that will stand the test of time, the ministry has concluded arrangements to set up Electoral Committees which will conduct the federations elections in September 2021.

“The Ministry will not rest on its oars in ensuring that its mandate, mission and vision are achieved in repositioning the sports sector in Nigeria.”

Some of the sports federations were embroiled in leadership tussles before the dissolution of the boards on 30 April.

However, there are concerns that the move could affect preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which will be held in July and August.
