Fasting continues as Sultan declares Thursday Eid-el-Fitr day

THE Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has said that since the new crescent was not sighted anywhere in the country yet, faithful are expected to continue fasting Wednesday; and thus declared Thursday, May 13 Eid-el-Fitr Day.

Deputy Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof. Salisu Shehu, made this known in a statement this night.

“Ramadan fast will therefore continue tomorrow Wednesday, 12 May 2021 as the 30th day of Ramadan.

“Consequently, Thursday 13 May 2021 is hereby declared as 1st of Shawwal, 1442 AH and the day of Eid-Fitr,” Shehu said.

He felicitated with the Nigerian Muslims and wished them Allah’s guidance.

He, however, urged them to continue to pray for peace, progress and development of the country.

The Sultan’s statement came after an Islamic agency in Saudi Arabia, Haramain Sharifain, declared that fasting continues on Wednesday.

In a tweet earlier today, Haramain Sharifain announced that Ramadan will last for 30 days.

It said the conclusion was derived from the findings of astronomers positioned at different locations in Saudi Arabia, including Sumair and Tumair.

“The Crescent for the month of Shawwal 1442 was NOT SEEN today, subsequently #EidUlFitr will be on Thursday, 13 May 2021,” the tweet reads.
