THE Mexican men’s national team will host the Super Eagles in a friendly match in the off-season.
The friendly was announced by the Mexicans on Tuesday night via their national team’s social media outlets.
The exhibition match is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, California, where there is a large population of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.
The match is billed for July, a full one month after the Super Eagles will have taken on Cameroon in another friendly in Austria.
“LA we’re back!!! On July 3 we will face Nigeria!!!!” the team tweeted.
“Who’s in for the ride??!!”
The match is scheduled for the huge Los Angeles Coliseum (78,000 capacity) and kick-off is 10pm (around 4am in Nigeria).
It has been suggested that since most of the Super Eagles’ overseas-based players will be on vacation in July, the Mexico friendly could feature mostly home-based players.
The last time Mexico and Nigeria met at senior men’s level was in March 2014.
The match ended 0-0, a fourth straight draw between the countries.
Of the four times Nigeria and Mexico have met, three have been friendly matches, two of them ending in 2-2 draws.
The only competitive fixture between them was at the King Fahd Cup in Saudi Arabia (now FIFA Confederations Cup) in 1995 which ended 1-1.
