ATLETICO Madrid won the 2020/2021 LaLiga title on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Real Valladolid.
The new champions overcame a deficit at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla to get the three points they needed to fend off fierce rivals Real Madrid.
Oscar Plano scored the opening goal for the hosts in the 18th minute as Valladolid counterattacked ruthlessly.
Valladolid took the advantage into half-time but Atletico Madrid were back level 12 minutes after the break, Angel Correa getting the equaliser.
Luis Suarez was the match winner with Atletico Madrid’s second goal in the 67th minute.
Atletico Madrid finished the season with 86 points from 38 matches.
This is Diego Simeone’s side’s first LaLiga title since he led Atletico to their first title since 2014.
Real Madrid finished second with 84 points after also coming from behind to defeat Villarreal 2-1.
Without their injured Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze, visitors Villarreal took the lead in the 20th minute with a Yeremi Pino strike.
Karim Benzema thought he had netted the equaliser in the 55th minute but the goal was chalked off for offside after a VAR review.
The Frenchman eventually got his goal and Real Madrid’s equaliser in the 87th minute.
Luka Modric scored a late winner two minutes into added time, but it was too little, too late as they finished second.
Third place went to Barcelona after a 1-0 win at home Eibar courtesy of Antoine Griezman’s goal, while Sevilla secured fourth spot.
Real Sociedad finished fifth and claimed the UEFA Europa League spot, while Huesca, Real Valladolid and Eibar have been relegated.
