Super Eagles vs Cameroon second friendly ends in drab draw

THE Super Eagles failed to gain revenge over Cameroon on Tuesday but they prevented another defeat.

The Indomitable Lions had ended a winless run against the Nigerians on Friday, winning for the first time in 21 years against their fierce foes.

Fulham midfielder Zambo Anguissa scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory over the Super Eagles in Vienna on Friday but Tuesday’s second match ended 0-0 in the same Austrian city.

The Nigerians had promised to win on Tuesday to get back at Cameroon, but it was a tepid performance of little spark from both sides and it fittingly ended goalless.

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr rang a few changes for Tuesday’s friendly contest, bringing in Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon and Valentine Ozornwafor from the start.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye retained his place after also starting on Friday, along with Chidozie Awaziem, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and Paul Onuachu.

However, despite the firepower upfront, the Super Eagles did not create enough to trouble the Lions, and Cameroon escaped with a draw.

This is the fourth game since October for the Super Eagles in Austria without a win.

In October, they lost to Algeria and drew with Tunisia in friendlies, and they have repeated that sequence in the back-to-back fixtures against Cameroon.

The latest friendly matches serve as preparation for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers coming up in September.
