Super Falcons land in Texas to face USA, others in Summer Series

AFRICAN champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, are already in the United States of America for the Summer Series four-nation tournament.

Along with the Super Falcons, the tournament will involve Jamaica, Portugal as well as hosts and world champions USA.

Nigeria’s contingent of some members of the technical crew and nine home-based players flew aboard Delta Airlines from Lagos to Atlanta and arrived on Tuesday morning.

They took another flight from Atlanta to Houston, Texas hours after, according to the media department of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The team’s American head coach Randy Waldrum and overseas-based players are expected to link up with the squad in Houston before the Super Falcons’ first match of the series against Jamaica at the BBVA Stadium on Thursday.

Three days later, the Falcons, one of only seven teams to have featured in every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals since the inaugural competition in 1991, will face Portugal at the same stadium.

The nine-time African champions’ final match is against the USA, the world’s most successful women’s team, having won the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Olympic women’s football event gold four times each.

The game comes up at the Q2 Stadium on 16 June.

This tournament will be the second one under Waldrum after he led the Super Falcons to win the Turkish Women’s Cup in February.
