President Gusau promises free and fair AFN elections

THE incumbent, Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, has assured all contestants of a free and fair process during the AthleticsFederation of Nigeria elections scheduled for Monday, 14 June.

Gusau who is also vying for a second term in office as President said in the spirit of unity and oneness, as well as interests of all contestants will be protected before and during the election.

“Let me assure all participants and contestants in the AFN election that it will be free and fair,” he stated in an AFN press release on Wednesday.

“The screening and electoral committees have been given a free hand to conduct the electoral process without fear or favour.

“AFN is one big family where all genuine stakeholders have a say. If we want to hit the ground running and avoid all unnecessary distractions, everybody must be on board.”

Gusau, who is also the Confederation of African Athletics Region II President, promised more events for homegrown athletes to aid their development.

Following the conclusion of the CAA Region II championship for U-20s, national trials and Grand Prix in Zaria recently, Gusau promised more local and regional events and emphasised the need to continue prioritising athletes’ welfare.

He assured that there is a concrete plan to attract private sponsorship similar to the Puma deal in order to have funds available to prosecute the federation’s programmes.
