Ronaldo sets Euros goal record in Portugal’s victory over Hungary

CRISTIANO Ronaldo made European Championship history on Tuesday as he led Portugal to defeat Hungary 3-0 in Budapest.

The Portugal captain scored his side’s second and third goals to become the first player in the competition’s history to score more than nine goals, beating France legend Michel Platini’s record.

Ronaldo, who is also the first player ever to feature in five different Euros, is also close to becoming the highest scorer in international football ever.

Raphael Guerrero scored Portugal’s other goal on the night.

Playing before a full house of over 67,000 fans at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary held on for more than 80 minutes with the home crowd cheering their every move.

Champions Portugal were dominant as expected and had few clear chances, Ronaldo missing the best of them towards the end of the first half.

However, Portugal got some luck when their breakthrough came, with Guerrero’s shot from inside the Hungary box taking a massive deflection to deceive goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi in the 84th minute.

Portugal doubled their lead four minutes later after Andre Silva was brought down inside the Hungary box and Ronaldo netted the penalty for his record-breaking 10th European Championship goal.

The Juventus superstar made it 3-0 and extended his new record when he exchanged passes with Silva and rounded Gulacsi to slot into an empty net two minutes into added time.
