Iheanacho sets UEFA Champions League target for Leicester City

KELECHI Iheanacho has set his sights on helping Leicester City to a higher Premier League finish than they achieved last season.

The Foxes were in the top four positions in the league for most of the season but fell just short at the end of the campaign and came fifth, just outside the UEFA Champions League places.

Iheanacho still rues that late collapse that scuppered their Champions League ambitions and he hopes it will spur them to go harder in the new season, which will start on 13 August.

The Super Eagles striker, who had the most prolific campaign in his career last season with 19 goals in 39 appearances, wants much more than goals this term.

“Obviously I scored goals last season. We were trying to get into the Champions League but it didn’t happen,” the former Manchester City forward told LCFC TV.

“I have a good feeling that this season it might fall for us and we get what we want. But we need to focus on the games one after the other, and hopefully we’ll get there at the end.”

When he was asked if he was promising more goals in the new season, Iheanacho replied: “Hopefully. We pray more goals will come but, most importantly, more wins and more points.”

After winning their first-ever FA Cup last May, Leicester City recently returned for pre-season training, and Iheanacho says he is pleased to be with his colleagues again, who include his friend and compatriot Wilfred Ndidi.

“It’s good to be back,” the 24-year-old said.

“We need to concentrate on the work that we have ahead. So we just need to focus and get through the pre-season and focus on the season.

“It’s good to be back with this special group of lads. Of course we’re like family and friends.”

Iheanacho and Leicester City will be involved in four competitions in the new season: the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
