Olympics women’s football: Zambia, China out as Holland’s Miedema sets record, USA advance

AFRICA’s representatives Zambia were eliminated from the women’s football event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Tuesday with a 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

Despite a 13th minute red card for Lushomo Mweemba, the Zambians kept out the Brazilians from adding to Andreas Alves’ 19th minute goal.

Barbra Banda, who made history with back-to-back hat-tricks in Zambia’s first two games, could not increase her six goals as Zambia finished third in Group F with one point.

The Africans, who were making their first appearance at the Olympics, however did better overall that one-time superpowers China.

The Asians finished bottom of the group with one point and minus 11 goal difference after losing 8-2 to the Netherlands on Tuesday.

Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema scored two of Holland’s goals, taking her haul in the tournament to eight in three games, the most goals ever scored by a player at a single Olympic Games women’s football event.

The Dutch won the group with seven points, ahead of Brazil on goal difference.

Great Britain won Group D with seven points after scoring late through a Michelle Prince own goal to hold Canada to a 1-1 draw.

Canada finished second in the group with five points, while Japan defeated Chile 1-0. The hosts, with four points, squeezed through to the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams.

Sweden cruised to a 100 percent record in Group G with a 2-0 win over New Zealand as champions United States were held to a 0-0 draw by Australia.

The Americans just about finished second in the group with four points, with Australia third, also with four points. New Zealand lost all their matches and finished with no points.
