SUPER Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho picked up on Saturday from where he left off last season by scoring the only goal as Leicester City won the season-opening FA Community Shield.

The Nigeria international converted a late penalty to give FA Cup holders Leicester City a 1-0 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley.

Iheanacho started on the bench and came on in the 79th minute to replace Harvey Barnes.

Ten minutes later, the Super Eagles star was doing damage to his old club. He nicked the ball off a hesitant Nathan Ake in the Manchester City box and was brought down by the Dutch defender.

The referee instantly pointed to the penalty spot and insisted on his decision despite the vehement protests of Manchester City players, led by captain Fernandinho, who was cautioned for dissent.

The slight delay did not faze Iheanacho as he hit his left-footed penalty into the top right corner to punish his old club and hand his current club their first Community Shield in 50 years.

Iheanacho, who was Leicester’s top scorer last season with 19 goals, did not really celebrate his goal against his former employers, but his teammates went wild with jubilation.

One of those teammates was Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who was once again magnificent in the middle of the park and played a key role in keeping the Manchester City attack at bay.

Manchester City also had a player with Nigerian blood in their team, the teenage Samuel Edozie who surprisingly started the match.

He was on for 65 minutes before making way for City’s new £100m British record signing Jack Grealish.
