BRAZIL retained their Olympic men’s football gold on Saturday after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Spain at the Nissan Stadium.
Substitute Malcom struck the winner in the 108th minute to hand Brazil the Tokyo 2020 gold medal.
Five years ago, Neymar scored the winning penalty as Brazil beat Germany to win their first gold on home soil.
Mikel Oyarzabal’s volley for Spain had cancelled out Matheus Cunha’s opener in the second half of normal time.
Everton forward Richarlison, the top scorer in the tournament, missed a penalty and hit the crossbar in the thrilling showdown.
Spain substitute Bryan Gil also struck the post with a stunning long-range shot that would have handed his side victory just one minute before the end of regulation time.
Brazil missed out on gold in London in 2012, settling for silver, meaning they have reached the final in three successive Olympics, winning two.
Spain, who won the title on home soil in 1992, were tipped for gold before the tournament because they had a squad filled with stars from players who attended the European Championship, where they reached the semi-finals: Barcelona’s Pedri and Eric Garcia, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.
However, they scraped their way to the final and were mostly outplayed by Brazil.
