MANCHESTER United were not at their best against Southampton on Sunday, but they did enough to match a long-standing Premier League record.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side drew 1-1 with the Saints at St Mary’s to stretch their unbeaten run away from home to 27 consecutive matches, equalling the English top flight record set by Arsenal between April 2003 and 2004.
Manchester United, who were vibrant last weekend when they defeated Leeds United 5-1 at Old Trafford, were flat and sloppy on Sunday, constantly misplacing their passes and giving the ball away in dangerous areas.
They paid for one of such turnovers in the 30th minute as Bruno Fernandes was robbed at the edge of the United box and Che Adams’ wayward shot was diverted into his own net by Fred.
United had created several chances before the goal, mostly from set-pieces, with Anthony Martial’s close range header getting cleared off the line and Harry Maguire heading over from a corner.
They did get their equaliser early in the second half as Paul Pogba touched the ball to Mason Greenwood for a simple finish in a crowded Southampton box.
Pogba, who had four assists against Leeds United, became the first player in Premier League history to have five assists in the first two games of a season.
In the other Premier League fixture on Sunday that kicked off at the same time as the St Mary’s clash, Harry Kane returned for Tottenham Hotspur as they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at the Molineux.
The England captain, who is the subject of interest from Manchester City, replaced Heung-Min Son in the 72nd minute for his first appearance of the season after returning late from his summer vacation.
Dele Alli won a penalty and converted it in the ninth minute for the game’s only goal as Spurs picked up their second win of the new season.
