SPORTS minster Sunday Dare is backing Team Nigeria to have an impressive outing at Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and do the nation proud.

The Games get underway on Tuesday and will end on 5 September.

“Based on conditions precedent and the resilience of our special athletes especially when on international assignments, I have no doubt in my mind that these athletes will again make Nigeria proud,” Dare said.

“Their ability to excel and win medals is in no doubt. They have been consistent. They have trained long and hard.”

Team Nigeria will participate in four events at the Tokyo Paralympics: powerlifting, para-athletics, para-table tennis and para-rowing.

The country will be represented by 22 athletes aiming to surpass the haul of eight gold medals won at the last Paralympic Games in Rio, Brazil in 2016, when Nigeria finished 17th in the overall medals table.

Team Nigeria was 17th on the medals table with eight gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The sports minister added that having worked closely with the coaches and technical team of the athletes, he had no doubts they will give Nigeria their best in Tokyo.

The Nigerian team won one silver and one bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics that ended just over two weeks ago.
