NIGERIAN striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his fifth goal in all competitions this season, netting in Union Berlin’s 2-1 Bundesliga home win over Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

The former junior international struck in the 41st minute to add to Union Berlin’s 22nd minute opening goal by Nico Giesselmann.

Jonas Hofmann pulled one back for Monchengladbach but Union Berlin held on to claim their first win of the new Bundesliga season.

Awoniyi, 24, has now scored five goals in six appearances in all competitions this season, three in three Bundesliga games.

In England, Nigerian trio William Troost-Ekong, Oghenekaro Etebo and Emmanuel Dennis all featured for Watford on Sunday in their 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Troost-Ekong was in central defence, Etebo in midfield and Dennis in attack as the Super Eagles stars formed the spine of the Hornets.

The promoted side were resilient and gave Tottenham a good game, but Heung-Min Son’s first-half goal was enough to settle a tight contest.

Son struck with an angled freekick that evaded everybody and sailed into the net three minutes before half-time to send Spurs to the top of the Premier League table with three wins out of three.

Tottenham Hotspur have now won their opening three league games of a season without conceding a single goal for the first time in their history.

Watford are 12th in the table with three points from one win and two defeats.

In the other Premier League fixture that kicked off at the same time on Sunday, Chris Wood (30,000th goal in the competition’s history) and Patrick Bamford scored as Burnley and Leeds United shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.
