THE Defence Ministry of Guinea has said that the Presidential Guard has quelled the coup plot which was staged today by some military officers, who claimed to have suspended the country’s constitution, and arrested the President, 83-year-old Alpha Conde.
Though the fate and whereabouts of the president remain unclear, the defence ministry stated that “security and combing operations are continuing to restore order and peace.”
Residents of Conakry, the country capital, told journalists that there had been sporadic gunfire across the city, and that tension remains high in several parts of the city.
United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has condemned the attempted coup and demanded immediate release of the President, who had earlier been shown in viral video today sitting on a sofa with soldiers guarding him, looking disheveled.
