TWO of the world’s most powerful nations, Russia and United States have pledged to help Nigeria fight insecurity.

In a message to President Buhari, yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his government’s commitment to promoting stronger security and stability on the African continent.

“I am convinced that further development of the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Nigeria fully accords with the interests of our peoples and promotes stronger security and stability on the African continent.

“I wish you good health and success, as I wish all Nigerian citizens peace and prosperity,” Putin said.

Also, Valentina Matvienko, the Speaker of the Russian parliament, in a message to Nigerian Senate President Ahmad Lawan, felicitated Nigerian people as the country marks its 61st Independence anniversary.

He said, “Relations between our countries, traditionally open and respectful in character, are based on the mutual aspiration towards a stronger partnership in the political sphere, trade and economy, cultural and humanitarian areas.

“Today, we actively implement joint projects in energy and mineral resources development, work together in infrastructure and industry and promote military cooperation.”

Similarly, the US Secretary of State, Anthony J. Blinken, in a message to felicitate with Nigeria on her 61st independence anniversary, also promised to support the country to improve health systems, strengthen democratic institutions, promote respect for human rights, and bolster economic growth through bilateral trade and investment.

Blinken assured that the United States looks forward to expanding its relationship over the coming year and advancing their mutual interests.
