I am a 25 year old undergraduate. I recently used a cream, called ‘Turbo max blue’ that is supposed to enlarge my penis. Unfortunately, the cream did not work. Kindly let me know why this was so and what I can do to enlarge my penis which is small like that of a six year old. Thanks.

Contrary to the claims of the marketers of penis enlargement drugs, many of such drugs which include tablets and creams hardly work. In some cases, they do more harm than good to the users. As has been scientifically confirmed, sexual fulfilment usually comes from the skilful use of the male sexual organ rather that its size. Therefore, running after organ enlargement drugs and sexual stimulants can cause more damage than good to the user.

My weak erection

I am a 40 year old man. My erection is not as strong as it was in my 18s and 20s and it does not last once I ejaculate. Kindly tell me the cause and what I should do.

While it is true that erections usually reduce in strength as one ages, it is still too early for you to have problems with your erection at age 40. Erectile dysfunction (ED) can occur for many reasons from vascular disease, neurological disease, diabetes, or prostate-related treatments or surgeries. Some life habits such as daily walking, eating a diet rich in natural foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and fish — with fewer red and processed meat and refined grains and paying attention to your vascular health has been found to be very helpful for avoiding ED. High blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides can all damage arteries in the heart (causing heart attack), in the brain (causing stroke), and leading to the penis (causing ED). An expanding waistline also contributes. Check with your doctor to find out whether your vascular system — and thus your heart, brain, and penis — is in good shape or needs a tune-up through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medications.

Troublesome nose bleeding

My three-year-old daughter has a regular attack of nose bleeding which can be very frightening. Kindly let me know what to do about the problem

— Salamatu (by SMS)

Nosebleeds (Epistaxis) can be frightening, but they aren’t usually a sign of anything serious and can often be treated at home.  Nosebleeds occur because the inside of the nose is full of tiny, delicate blood vessels that can become damaged and bleed relatively easily. Common causes of nosebleeds include: picking the nose, blowing the nose very hard, a minor injury to the nose and changes in humidity or temperature causing the inside of the nose to become dry and cracked. To stop a nosebleed, make your daughter to sit down and firmly pinch the soft part of her nose, just above the nostrils, for at least 10-15 minutes. Tell her to lean forward and breathe through the mouth – this will drain blood down the nose instead of down the back of the throat. Place an ice pack or bag of frozen vegetables covered by a towel on the bridge of her nose and make her to stay upright, rather than lying down. This reduces the blood pressure in the blood vessels of the nose and will discourage further bleeding. If the bleeding eventually stops, you won’t usually need to seek medical advice. However, in some cases you may need further treatment from your family doctor or in hospital. To prevent nosebleeds tell your daughter to avoid picking her nose and keep her fingernails short. You can also regularly apply petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) to the inside of her nostrils to keep the inside of her nose moist.

My husband is too large

I am a recently married woman who married as a virgin. My husband is a kind and loving man. The problem is that his very big male organ gives me pains each time we have sex. Kindly advise me on what to do about this.

— Ibidun (by SMS)

Even though your husband’s penis may be big in size, the vagina when well lubricated can still accommodate this large organ without any problem. However, in order to achieve this, it is imperative for your husband to get you well prepared for the sexual act through a prolonged foreplay. Once this is done, your painful sexual acts will be a thing of the past.

Is cracking the knuckles safe?

My husband who incidentally is a medical doctor enjoys cracking his knuckles. Apart from the noise of the cracked knuckles which is annoying, I read somewhere that the habit may also lead to arthritis of the finger joints, a claim my husband refutes. Please let me know whether or not it is safe to crack one’s knuckles and what I can do to make my husband stop the annoying habit.

— Chinwe (by SMS)

The “pop” of a cracked knuckle is caused by bubbles bursting in the synovial fluid — the fluid that helps lubricate joints. The bubbles pop when you pull the bones apart, either by stretching the fingers or bending them backward, creating negative pressure. Cracking your knuckles may aggravate the people around you, but it probably won’t raise your risk for arthritis. That’s the conclusion of several studies that compared rates of hand arthritis among habitual knuckle-crackers and people who didn’t crack their knuckles. Even if knuckle cracking doesn’t cause arthritis, there’s still good reason to let go of the habit. Chronic knuckle-cracking may lead to reduced grip strength. And there are at least two published reports of injuries suffered while people were trying to crack their knuckles.
