Carabao Cup: West Ham end City’s dominance, Lookman scores in Leicester win

HOLDERS Manchester City were eliminated from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night after a penalty shootout defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side fell 4-3 on penalties to suffer their first defeat in the competition since 2016.

City, who won the Cup four times in a row in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, were taken to penalties after full-time ended 0-0 in London.

England forward Phil Foden was the only player to miss his spot kick as David Moyes’s team advanced to the quarter-finals.

Also on the same night, Brentford, Leicester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur all progressed to the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

At the King Power Stadium, Ademola Lookman scored one of the goals for Leicester City to send the Foxes to the quarter-finals.

The fourth-round clash with Brighton ended 2-2 before Leicester City won 4-2 on penalties.

Harvey Barnes shot Leicester into the lead in the sixth minute but Adam Webster equalised in first-half added time.

Lookman, who is eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian parents, restored Leicester City’s lead also in first-half injury time.

Zambia striker Enock Mwepu got Brighton level again with a smart header in the 71st minute as regulation time ended in a stalemate.

Lookman’s compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho replaced him in the 73rd minute as Leicester City sought to win in regulation time.

The Foxes scored all four of their penalty kicks while Brighton missed two of theirs.In another Carabao Cup encounter on Wednesday night, Liverpool eased through to the quarter-finals past hosts Preston North End 2-0 with second-half goals from Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi.

Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford completed the quarter-final line-up with wins over Burnley and Stoke City respectively.

Spurs defeated Burnley 1-0 while Brentford won 2-1 at Stoke City.
