I am about to get married and the religion of my prospective husband does not permit Blood Transfusion. My fear is what will happen to me if I get pregnant and I need Blood Transfusion during child birth.

With proper Ante natal care, the need for Blood Transfusion during child birth may not arise. However, it will be a good thing to resolve the issue with your prospective husband before marriage.

I react to face mask

My job as a hotel worker demands that I use facemask consistently for about 10 hours every day. In view of this, the skin of my face has started itching me and peeling in some places. Kindly advise me on what to do.

Masks do a great job of protecting us and others from coronavirus infection, but they also keep in sweat, oil, moisture and dirt. This is why some sensitive skins react to the use of masks. One of the ways to handle the problem is to change the facemask as frequently as possible. To conserve money, you may buy reusable ones which you can wash with soap and water. Moisturizers have also been confirmed to help keep away dry and itchy skin. It is recommended that you moisturize your skin as frequently as possible in between changing facemasks.

 Breast lump and examination

I read somewhere that early detection of Breast Lumps through Self Examination is the best way to avoid Breast Cancer. Kindly let me know how to carry this out.

        — Cecilia (by WhatsApp)

Since many cases of breast lumps are discovered accidentally, it is important for individuals to be taught on how to examine their breasts. All women should be advised to examine their breasts monthly. In women who still see their menses, the examination should be done just after the menstrual period. The breast should be inspected initially while standing before a mirror with the hands at the sides, overhead and pressed firmly on the hips to contact the chest muscles. Lumps, asymmetry of breasts and slight dimpling of the skin may become apparent as a result of these movements. Next, in a lying down position, each breast should be carefully palpated with the fingers of the opposite hand. The examination should be meticulous, methodical and gentle.  Abnormal variations in breast size and contour, minimal nipple retraction, redness or retraction of the skin are best identified by careful observation in good light.  All abnormal breast lumps should be reported to the doctor for further investigations.

The side effects of Covid 19

We are constantly reading about new side effects from COVID-19. Some of the concerns are dementia, lung and heart issues. My question is to know if this information is true or that the risks of COVID-19 are just being exaggerated?

The truth is that because COVID 19 infection is a relatively new disease, scientists are still learning about the condition and the possible conditions that may be associated with it. For this reason, researchers need more time to determine the actual frequency of associated events with covid-19. Having said this, it is important to note that some of the side effects associated with COVID 19 are rare given the sheer number of people in the world who have had the infection.

How to have good teeth

In my effort to have a good set of teeth, I have been soaking my toothbrush in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and grape fruit juice in order to keep away germs. Kindly let me know what else I can do to have a good set of teeth.

— Wisdom (by SMS)

You don’t need to soak your toothbrush in either hydrogen peroxide or grapefruit extract to keep away germs.  There is no scientific basis for this Dental experts have confirmed that the best way to have a good dental hygiene is to brush your teeth twice a day – morning and evening.  They also advocate a proper brushing technique which is the up and down movement of the toothbrush rather than the sideways movement which does not adequately clean the teeth.  You will also need to change your toothbrush regularly (once every 3 months) or as soon as the bristles of the brush start to scatter. The above should of course be done in conjunction with the intake of a well- balanced diet and the avoidance of excessive consumption of sugar, pastries and sweets.
