DAVID Okereke could be out of action for up to three weeks with injury, reports in Italy have claimed.

The Nigerian striker sustained the muscle injury early in his side Venezia’s 4-3 Serie A defeat to Verona on Sunday. He had to be withdrawn from the match after just seven minutes, replaced by Dennis Johnsen.

Okereke, 24, had missed Verona’s 4-0 defeat to Atalanta Tuesday last week due to a hamstring strain, but he was declared fit to face Verona.

Reports said he underwent tests on Tuesday which showed an injury to one of his flexors, muscles that allow human beings to bend parts of the body.

The prognosis is that Okereke will need three weeks to recover fully, meaning he will miss key Serie A clashes against Juventus, Sampdoria and Lazio before the winter break.

The skilful Nigerian is an important member of the Venezia squad, who got promoted to the Italian top flight this season.

Okereke, who is on loan at Venezia from Club Brugge until 30 June, has scored four goals and provided one assist in 14 Serie A appearances this season, 11 of them starts.

Venezia are 16th in Serie A with 15 points, five ahead of the relegation zone.
